BESS Grid challenges Subsidies Grid Operations Greece

What's the deal with merchant standalone batteries?

with Evangelos Gazis as moderator (Aurora Energy Research) , Elena Kalogeropoulou (Optimus Energy) , Dr. Sotiris Kapellos (HELLENiQ RENEWABLES ENERGY)

In March 2025, the Greek Ministry of Environment & Energy released a landmark decree targeting 4.7 GW of utility‑scale standalone battery storage, fully merchant-operated and with priority grid connections. This initiative addresses critical grid challenges: renewable curtailments surged to ~200 GWh in March, and could escalate to 1.7 TWh in 2025 without action. Greek planners estimate the system will need 4-7 GW of storage to ensure reliability and economic viability. Join us to uncover how this major program sets a turning point for Greece’s clean energy transition and how developers, off‑takers, tollers, and optimizers will collaborate to build a resilient, profitable merchant battery ecosystem.

This webinar was held in September 2025, but the recordings are still available!

  • Commercial viability: How are merchant standalone BESS projects structured without subsidies? Explore project economics, permitting timelines, sizing considerations, and the impact of this policy on deployment strategy.
  • Financing viability: How do commercial agreements (tolling, PPAs) de-risk investments? Unpack the structure of tolling and off‑take agreements that underpin merchant BESS bankability.
  • Strategies to revenue-stack and optimize performance: Discover the benefits of multi-market participation (energy, FCR, aFRR/mFRR)..
