Over the last four years, the deployment of floating solar has grown more than a hundredfold, surpassing the milestone threshold of 1 GW in September 2018. Although the vast majority of deployments are currently limited to Asia, the technology is starting to make waves in Europe as well with various multi-megawatt projects in the pipeline.
The World Bank reported a conservative global potential of 400GW of floating solar, showing the immense potential of the technology. Combined with hydro-power or off-shore wind, the opportunities seem even bigger. However, a lot of fuzz exists around the alleged efficiency gains, the positive or negative environmental impact and the effect of water on the maintenance of solar panels. It’s time to clarify these issues. It’s time to link all the stakeholders. It’s time for the Global Floating Solar Conference!
