German solar firms see brighter sales in 2nd quarter

Sales figures from German solar companies rose at the start of this year while a burst of foreign demand pointed to further growth, engineering industry association VDMA said on Thursday.

Although the sector is still at a low point compared with previous years, orders for components, machines and equipment that convert sunlight directly into energy grew 34 percent on the quarter in the first three months of 2009, VDMA said.

"After the collapse in orders in the second half of 2008, this is a respectable result," said VDMA's Eric Maiser, who leads a group specialised in the technology, known as photovoltaics.
