In early 2006, the Governor of Delta State in Nigeria was
looking for a solution to a serious problem that existed in
the capital city of Asaba. Along streets and roadways lay
electrical wires, unused and non-operational because of
the lack of a sufficient power source. Another problem
plaguing the city was unreliable power to provide safety
and security for residents and visitors.
Solar powered lighting from Sol, Inc. was selected since
it provided a solution for both reliable power and quality
lighting. Over the course of several months, over 500
SLV solar lighting systems were installed along streets
and roadways throughout the city. Sol solar lights proved
economical because they were easy to install, required
little maintenance and did not need to be connected to a
conventional grid system. Secondly, Sol installations were
immune to power outages and sabotages, which provided
an extremely reliable lighting solution. An additional
bonus was the energy to power the light was free,
allowing the Governor to save money.
Sol’s complete roadway solution also solved the problems
of three segments of Delta State’s population. The solar
lights now enable business people to conduct trade after
dark, which has increased
revenue for local citizens.
Women are able to
socialize in the evenings
after work because they
are able to walk around
in a secure environment.
Residents and visitors
who use to fear walking at
night because of the lack of
lighting can now safely walk
from one part of the city to
another thanks in part to
Sol’s solar powered lighting
solutions.
