"We are looking at some opportunities, including solar, but I cannot elaborate more," JH Tzeng, spokesman for the Hsinchu, Taiwan-based company, said in a phone interview, confirming a Financial Times report today which cited Chief Executive Rick Tsai.

"We're not only eyeing the green sector, we're eyeing several others but Rick did not name them."

Taiwan Semiconductor is considering diversifying away from chips to combat declining industry margins, the FT reported on its website, citing Tsai. Tzeng said yesterday he didn't know when the company would make a decision on such investments.
