Sahara Desert Solar Project Unlikely to Happen, Liebreich Says
BUSINESSWEEK - A 400 billion-euro ($550 billion) plan by companies including Siemens AG and Munich Re to develop solar-electricity generators in the Sahara Desert is unlikely to come to fruition in its present form, Bloomberg New Energy Finance Chief Executive Officer Michael Liebreich said.
The Desertec project, which Siemens and Munich Re have said may provide 15 percent of Europe’s power by mid-century, has political and economic questions including the cost of long- distance transmission of electricity and security threats, Liebreich said today at his organization’s annual conference.
